Nameplate capacity

Installed capacity is useful for inventory and planning, but it does not show whether every unit is ready, fuelled, synchronized or able to export its full output.

Derating and outages

Ambient conditions, equipment condition, maintenance and technical limits may reduce a unit’s dependable output. A planned or forced outage may remove the unit entirely for a period.

Fuel and dispatch

Thermal plants require available fuel at the correct pressure, quality and quantity. System operators may also dispatch plants below capacity because of demand, cost or network constraints.

The grid matters

Generation is useful only if the network can move electricity to demand centres while maintaining frequency, voltage and security limits.

The right dashboard

A credible dashboard should display installed capacity, derated capacity, available capacity, actual generation, fuel status and network conditions separately.
